Quotation For This Week

Biotechnology is creating a new industrial

revolution based on biology instead of petroleum. As biotech processes replace

old rust-belt technologies, they are enabling a transformation from a

petroleum-based economy to a bio-based economy.

An Awesome of 3rd Week of Communication Module

We started our 3rd week of Communication Module by an Interview Techniques conducted by Mr. Farizal Mohd Razali. In this lecture, we were learning about details on interview techniques that we are usually take for granted. The module includes a preparation before, on and after we had an interview. Usually, people will not take seriously what they are supposed to do before and after the interview. However, within these two days, we had a great job when we interviewed by Mr. Khairul Najmi likes a real interview session. This gave us a full awareness of interview session when we have an interview during works in future.

In Wednesday, we did a Body Language for Presentation with Fatimah Abu Bakar, a well known actress in Malaysia. She was a wonderful and humble person even though she is a popular actress and trainer. She shared her experiences during acting with us and we felt very comfortable like no barrier between us. We learnt about Grooming and dining Etiquette with a 2 most experts’ persons. Actually, I personally had learnt about Dining Etiquette during matriculation program and this module actually add some new things when we also learnt about ‘French’ and ‘Italy’ words. (Much of food’s name is in Italian words). However, we also enjoyed during grooming session when we actually were given a ‘privilege’ to explore some new things on how to dress during working, interview or social activities. We learnt on how to match ties and dress, what not to put and what have to put in dressing and so on.
The last day during 3rd week module was not too much lecture on it, however, we were giving an assignment to make a questionnaire and we have to distributed it among us and finalize the process by analyzing the data. That’s much enjoy full activity we had for this week.

About Malaysia Biotechnology Industry

Tuesday morning, we have an interview session with Mr. Farizal, our speaker for interview technique module. Luckily, I don’t need to attend this mocking interview since I’d done my presentation last week. However, we need to stay until 5 p.m. since we gonna get our food's allowance! But, today I’m gonna share some information that basically ignored by under graduates, hence it is necessary for them (including me) to really know about it.

As we know (actually for biotech’s students), Biotechnology is the science of using living organisms for the development of new therapeutic drugs and food items. For these purposes, many Biotech’s organization has develop and expanding their research area to full fill the demanding of this sector. Nevertheless, many of us (including me) have actually focused the research activity only in well known institutes or university. Perhaps, we have to change our mind set instead of focusing only in the university to industrial area.

Major biotechnology firms have also set up operations across the United State, UK, Switzerland, Germany and Asia. These firms actually needs more than researcher:

1. Process and Product Development
2. Clinical Research
3. Quality Control
4. Administrative Department

For this post, let us see what are Malaysia’s policies to facilitate the long term growth of this industry. As we can see, the field of biotechnology is still new in Malaysia and it offers a niche and lucrative opportunities in equipment, training and education. The Government of Malaysia through the Malaysia Biotechnology Corporation (BioTech Corp) hopes to develop over 400 biotechnological companies by 2010 propelling the country into this new era. Until now (2010), we are informed (informally) that there are about 150 companies that registered with Biotech corp. and have a status of BioNexus companies. Opportunity is there for us to grab this chance and therefore, we have to deeply think what area we will interest more. Currently, Malaysia focuses on three major biotechnology industry segments:

1. Agricultural Biotechnology – this relates to applications of biotechnology in food and agriculture.
2. Healthcare Biotechnology – this relates to applications of biotechnology for medicine and health.
3. Industrial Biotechnology – this relates to applications of biotechnology in industries particularly the management of waste and the preservation of the environment.

As a conclusion, it’s remaining to us to contribute something for Malaysia biotechnology industry, as we are moving fast to be one of the competitive countries in Biotechnology industry.

2nd week in BEsT program

It was a second week (8th -12th March), when we learnt about new things in the communication module. Modules including Effective Meeting (Monday), Resume and Cover Letter (Sunday), Communications Concept and Skills (Wednesday), Public Speaking (Thursday) and short lecture on Advanced Report Writing (Friday). We also glad to have a great moment with Prof. Greene from Babson College. She was so perfection and eligible to give a lecture on entrepreneurship. At least, we have a new view in the sense of what is entrepreneur and what is myths regarding to what we believed before about entrepreneurship.

In this week, we have new members and we welcome all of them to this group of UNIRazak BEsT program. You all have chosen the best group with us. Not to forget, we also have a lecture on how to operate and manage our blog by Dr. Khairudin Damhoeri (Sunday). Although we tend to explore it by our self, however, it was a great and it is imperative for us to start a new medium communication among us with the guidance and experience sharing by Dr. Khairudin.

For this week also, we have a public speaking lecture with Mr. Farizal, a cool, smart and confidence person. I admire him in term of how he manage to speaks and deliver information clearly, of course because of his experience before. Bravo Mr. Farizal! Perhaps I will be like you in the next 2-3 years later! We also have been given a surprise during Wednesday’s lecture- a task. Surprisingly, I have been selected to be in the group whom need to conduct a press conference! Wow, and this is the first time we have it in our life! I do search in the internet and actually, it is not as hard as we think. However, in order to gather information about the topic, what are the protocols and all that, in one night, for sure it was a night dream for us. However, it was a great moment to present our hard works during the presentation day.

Last but not least, during this 2nd week, we also have learnt on how to write an impressive cover letter, report writing and informative resume. It is funny when I compare my old resume with the new edited one. It was so messy with words! I think it is better to have someone who can read your resume and comments on it. I purposely suggested it after this module and it is imperative. Right now, I have a confident on my own resume actually. I love Mrs. Norliza and Mrs. Farahiyah! Syukran Jazilan!

Okay, and that’s all about for last week, and hope everything will be fine and great for this week also!
